Body Scanning – Paying attention to the feelings in your body

 

Reconnecting with the body is very important. We have gradually been conditioned over time to disconnect from our bodies. This conditioning begins at birth and is carried on throughout our life in many forms including parental and social conditioning, and the use of prescription drugs to block pain and emotion. In addition, our continued focus on looking for the quick fix: Why feel your pain when you can take a drug to numb yourself?  Let’s not show our emotion because it's painful, or else we may be looked at as being weak.

Working with my own body, I have discovered the important role it plays in our personal and spiritual growth. Not to mention our comfort and health as we grow older. The body is where the soul resides. It can help you strengthen your connection with spirit and the guiding power that creates all things. Creating a deeper connection with the body can help facilitate the release of old energy or physical blocks that no longer support your well-being. The release of this energy from the body can help you move from striving in life to thriving, improve your health and help change the way you interact or react to other people and the world. You must learn to no longer take your body for granted and recognize the value and importance of this partnership as you travel on this journey of a spiritual being having this human experience.

Establishing a stronger connection and partnership with your body allows you to let go of unwanted and unhelpful behaviors, beliefs and energy patterns that keep you from tapping into your personal empowerment and natural birthright of abundance. It allows you to let go of fear, anger and other emotions that keep you from creating what you want in your life and stop you from connecting on a stronger spiritual path.

This is a tool and just that, it will only help you when used on a frequent basis. Once body scanning becomes second nature to you, you can use it in many life situations to change your experience.

Find a time and place where you will not be disturbed. Take your glasses off and remember to turn off the ringer on your phone. Sit in a comfortable position with your palms resting on your legs. Palms can be either face up or face down, whichever is more comfortable. First notice where your attention goes, it will usually be directed to a place that speaks to you, often where you feel pain or discomfort. If you do not have pain or discomfort somewhere that is OK just notice where your attention goes and that will be the right place. We will call this the release point. Once you find the release point, remember where it is and begin scanning away from it. You want to look for a place that you can relax and release on a deeper level. Remember that no matter how relaxed you think you are you can always relax further. If you feel like this is not possible do not worry just keep looking and practicing. We can lose the ability to connect with muscles in our body over time and you have to reestablish the communication between the brain, your nervous system and the muscles. Be patient with this process -- changing years of habitual behaviors often can take some time but be assured with continued practice you will notice change. Awareness is the key to relaxing.  If you do not know something is tight, you cannot relax it.  This takes practice.

Each time you find a new place in your body to relax (which might include your eyes, tongue, breath or any other part of your body), remember that place and move on looking for new places. The key is to bring yourself back to each place you find by circling through the body over and over again. Once you leave a place you relaxed, it will probably tighten up again so you will need to come back to it later. Eventually it will release, however this may not happen in one session and may take multiple sessions. You can accelerate releasing these holding patterns by including bodywork. Using the body scanning technique during a bodywork session can reduce pain and help you release faster.
