Our Deepest Fear
Most people I talk to want more change toward peace in the world. It is my wholehearted belief that the most effective way to accomplish this longing is to begin by bringing more peace into our personal lives, body, mind and spirit.
Changing the world begins with changing ourselves first. This change begins from inside: it does not start by trying to change someone else or something on the outside.
Marianne Williamson is a spiritual teacher who teaches from A Course in Miracles, a book that changed my life many years ago. Her words on our deepest fear are an invitation to change in a unique way:
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, "Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?" Actually who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we're liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
I always felt small growing up, never feeling like I fit in. Moreover, there were many years when I was blinded by the pain and suffering in my life. I could not see the light in the world, and -- even more importantly -- I could not see my own light. You have a choice today and always to look for the light within, to discover and discard that which keeps you from seeing your own light and the light that resides in everyone and everything.
It has only been through questioning my life and the world around me that I have been begun to discover my own light, to see the perfection in things just as they are and know that I do not have to control or change anything. This is not a life of passivity but one of love, joy and abundance. Most of us are in a survival state, one in which we continually repeat certain behaviors and actions that are not for our highest good or the planet’s highest good. While change is not always easy, the joy that self-discovery brings far outweighs the challenge.
Many of you have been on this path, while others are just beginning to question their lives and the world around them. Maybe you are not sure what to do next. It does not matter. Wherever you are, we are all in this together and each step we take supports the whole. We are all exactly where we need to be, so look for what you can learn by what is being presented in your life. Do not feel that life is beating you up: know that it is teaching you about yourself if only you are willing to listen.
Read my tip this month; then begin to question your life and the world. What is the truth? We often take things at face value only because we are told it is the truth by authority. You know I heard the world used to be flat. How many things have you believed to be true most of your life only to find out they weren’t?
If you are not already on this journey of self-discovery, is today the day to start? Or will you put if off another day? Do you really have the luxury of time? The world needs your peace.
